I was having a discussion with a friend who thought that education was a a waste of time when you could look for ways to make money. He went on to mention successful people who didnt have college degrees like Michael Dell, Bill Gates , Richard Branson etc.Of course, we also know of people that are highly educated but live very ordinary lives.

We are all looking to earn a living but I feel that education broadens the mind into thinking in new ways.I would rather be educated and living on $60,000/yr than be a CEO, famous actress etc and be stinking rich.It is sometimes hard to have an intelligent discussion with someone with a narrow mind.

PS:I am not insinuating that every college grad is smart and vice versa.

What do you think?

I think people often blow things out of proportion.... Granted the Dells, Gates, Bransons and co of this world have hit it big w/out college degrees - but you can't say they didn't have an education - Gates for instance spent more time programming computers as a kid than most highly educated programmers get to do in an entire lifetime..

Perhaps, for the average person, its a question of what the odds are.. I dare say the odds are significantly higher for succeeding with a decent education than without one..

ooohhhhhh,

$$$ without education...soooo loaded!

folks..make no mistake. Very few people just drop out of school, have no special skill, know no special people, have no special opportunities, no pre-existing wealth, no clear cut idea, end up successful. Plug in all the names ..Gates, Dell, Barry Diller, Oreck,Richard Branson etc and you will see that though they didn’t go to school, there was something unique in their story that shot them to success.

I challenge you. Just drop out of school with none of the above. You might end up successful…but I wont help pay the bills while you’re out grinding

Nicely said by Sir T. I personally think that getting an education is never a waste, and sometimes the whole experience of getting your degree teaches you things that end up being a stepping stone to a future that may or may not use your degree. It's not like if you have an education, you can't go on to be the next Bill Gates.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that an education is valuable, not only for what you learn in the courses, or through the studying, but what you can learn through the process of acquiring said education.
